Job Description

Location: Alberton, Gauteng (NSPCA Office)

Type: Full-time

Reports to: Communications Unit Manager

Position Overview

The NSPCA is seeking a focused, motivated, and research-savvy Grants and Major Donor Officer to join its small, collaborative Communications Unit. This is a writing- and relationship-intensive role designed to support the NSPCA’s national work through institutional funding, including CSI partnerships, trusts and foundations, and major donors.

The successful candidate will thrive in a detail-oriented environment and will work closely with other Unit members to deliver compelling funding proposals and steward long-term partnerships.

The ideal candidate will have strong written communication skills, a curious and analytical mind, and the ability to build trust with professional stakeholders. Previous experience in fundraising is welcome, but exceptional writing and relationship skills are more important.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Donor Scouting & Research
  • Proactively identify and assess funding opportunities that align with the NSPCA’s mission and priorities
  • Maintain a database of deadlines, eligibility criteria, contact details, and relationship history
  • Proposal & Report Writing
  • Write compelling funding proposals, appeals, and donor reports in collaboration with internal teams
  • Develop supporting documents such as budgets and narratives as needed
  • Monitor and record proposal outcomes to refine future strategies
  • Donor Relationship Management
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with institutional donors and grantmakers
  • Respond to donor queries and ensure timely feedback
  • Develop tailored follow-up or re-engagement strategies
  • Strategic Collaboration
  • Support the implementation and evolution of the NSPCA’s Institutional Giving Strategy
  • Collaborate with other staff in the Communications Unit to align fundraising efforts with broader brand goals
  • Participate in an environment that encourages shared insights and collaboration across silos
  • Business Appeals & In-kind Giving
  • Draft ad hoc appeals for financial or in-kind donations from companies and suppliers
  • Coordinate donated goods and services with the relevant operational Units

Qualifications And Requirements

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • A strong writer with excellent grammar and attention to detail
  • A thoughtful researcher and confident communicator
  • Comfortable working with internal teams and external funders
  • Curious, organised, and adaptable
  • Experienced with basic office software and tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, CRMs a plus)
  • Passionate about animal welfare or social impact (advantageous but not required)
