Job description

Background :

  • Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, under its Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • WHC provides the Faculty with a legal framework to operate research and other activities supporting its academic objectives. Additionally, WHC offers a range of products and services to academics.

Main purpose of the job :

  • To lead the provision of effective operational support services to all staff and sites, specifically in financial management, donor liaison, and organizational administration.

Location :

  • 31 Princess of Wales Terrace, Parktown

Key performance areas :

  • Ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures.
  • Review and approve purchase orders on the WHC portal in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with WHC policies and donor regulations.
  • Ensure expenditure remains within budgets.
  • Review and approve general ledger entries, journal entries, audit files, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Manage accounting support staff effectively.
  • Prepare and manage budgets.
  • Provide financial advice to divisions and sites.
  • Compile accurate financial and donor reports.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements.
  • Practice effective self-management.
  • Perform ad hoc duties such as requesting invoices from external and internal stakeholders, including cost recovery invoices.
  • Prepare journals as needed.

Required minimum education and training :

  • BCom in Accounting or equivalent.

Required minimum work experience :

  • At least 3 years of financial reporting experience in a healthcare or donor-funded environment.

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities :

  • Experience working in a donor-funded organization or NGO is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and accounting software is desirable.
  • A dynamic and compatible personality capable of engaging with clients, donors, and staff at all levels.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
  • The environment may be busy; excellent management skills and attention to detail are required.
  • May require overtime work and travel to various sites.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
