GLS Supply Chain Equipment is looking for a talented Graduate Mechanical Engineer to join our team.

This role is based in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.

We specialize in the design, manufacture, rental, and service of a wide range of reusable assets, including timber, plastic, and steel equipment. Our mission is to deliver innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions that improve supply chain efficiency across South Africa.

Purpose of the Role

The Graduate Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in developing, improving, and managing GLS’s full range of supply chain equipment. This includes product design, technical documentation, product improvement, client-driven modifications, and overseeing plant and equipment layouts, installation, commissioning and technical support. The role also extends to managing civil infrastructure projects and driving improvements on semi-automated repair lines, which incorporate PLC integration, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain detailed CAD models and drawings for GLS’s equipment portfolio (timber, plastic, steel assets).
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive product repository and technical library.
  • Coordinate and manage external product testing.
  • Evaluate and benchmark product performance against industry standards.
  • Design, optimize, and update plant layouts
  • Oversee the integration of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components into production equipment.
  • Specify and supervise installation, commissioning, and maintenance of production equipment.
  • Identify and drive opportunities for operational efficiency improvements and equipment upgrades.
  • Manage civil infrastructure projects and contractors as they relate to site expansions, refurbishments, and upgrades.
  • Apply sound project management principles to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.
  • Provide technical support and training to operations and maintenance teams as required.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for equipment failures or performance shortfalls.
  • Ensure all designs and modifications comply with relevant engineering codes, standards, and safety requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging technologies and materials that could benefit GLS’s equipment portfolio.
  • Support the development and implementation of maintenance programs for critical equipment.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng or BSc Eng).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including pneumatic, hydraulic, and automated components.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, materials, and supply chain equipment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a cross-functional team.
  • Willingness to travel to operational sites as needed.
