Graduate in Training (GIT): Electronic Engineer

About The Job

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Graduate in Training in the Aerospace Systems Impact Area within the Defence and Security cluster. This program offers graduates practical work experience under the guidance of experienced researchers and engineers in cross-functional teams. The position is based in Pretoria and reports to the Research Group Leader.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in electrical upgrades, installations, and system enhancements for wind tunnel facilities;
  • Assist in wind tunnel plant energy management;
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical faults, including motors, control systems, and wiring;
  • Assist with programming Siemens and Allen Bradley PLCs;
  • Design and install power factor correction (PFC);
  • Assist in the installation, testing, and commissioning of instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

Project Management and Upgrades

  • Support electrical system projects, ensuring safety standards and timelines are met;
  • Assist in electrical upgrades and system improvements.

Automation and Control Systems

  • Assist with Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs);
  • Assist in designing and integrating industrial automation and control systems;
  • Design and program PCBs.

Team Support and Development

  • Collaborate with engineers and maintenance teams to improve operations;
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities and generate technical reports;
  • Provide technical support, design, and implementation assistance.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical and electronic engineering;
  • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks);
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, PLC programming, and automation;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
  • Good academic performance and interpersonal skills;
  • Problem-solving orientation;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Competencies include analytical and conceptual thinking, customer service, initiative, networking, numerical reasoning, planning, process engineering, and teamwork;
  • South African citizen eligible for security clearance.
