Qualifications

Job description

Key Description of Position

The Geotechnical Manager will contribute to the planning, design, and execution of projects related to the construction and maintenance of critical infrastructure, including but not limited to buildings, roads, railways, airports, bridges, and water and sewerage systems. This role involves active participation in key project phases, ensuring adherence to geotechnical principles and standards. The Geotechnical Manager will also collaborate on client projects, providing technical expertise and support to achieve project deliverables in accordance with established job orders and client requirements. The Geotechnical Manager will be expected to be registered with SACNASP/ECSA and will work under the Director and laterally with the Laboratory Manager.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Professional Conduct: Adhere to the Codes of Ethics as defined by SACNASP/ECSA in all professional activities.
  • Documentation: Participate in the drafting and review of manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and policy documents for clients as required.
  • Infrastructure Delivery: Play an active role in Infrastructure Delivery Management and Borrow Pit Management Systems.
  • Field Investigations: Assist the laboratory team in conducting field investigations, including site visits, geological mapping, and geotechnical data collection. Collect soil samples, rock samples, and other relevant materials for analysis.
  • Data Analysis: Collaborate with technicians and the Laboratory Manager to analyse and interpret field and laboratory test results. Utilise geotechnical software and tools to analyse data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions. Assist in preparing reports and recommendations based on geotechnical engineering principles.
  • Technical Reporting: Perform Quality Control and Assurance in the preparation of technical reports, including geotechnical investigations, laboratory testing reports, and other relevant assessments. Document findings, data analysis, and provide clear and concise written explanations of geological and geotechnical information.
  • Client Interaction: Participate in and assist with client interactions in collaboration with the Laboratory Manager.
  • GIS Studies: Participate in and assist with GIS feasibility studies and investigations for projects in the Concept and Viability Stages.
  • Tender Management: Manage the tender bid processes in collaboration with the Engineering Geologist.
  • Quality Assurance: Support the Quality Officer in the ISO 17025:2017 implementation process.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, environmental scientists, and technicians.
  • Safety: At all times, prioritise safety by exercising due regard for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues, and clients, in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Communication and Leadership: Demonstrated excellence in communication, leadership, and time management.
  • Geological Expertise: Proficient in the identification of basic and complex rocks and their derivative soils, including their mineralogy.
  • Materials Testing: Familiarity with laboratory testing methods for civil engineering materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to interpret and effectively present geotechnical data.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the preparation of technical reports and communication of findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Teamwork and Multitasking: Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Adaptability: Ability to work outdoors in varying and potentially harsh weather conditions.
  • Software Proficiency: Competent in the use of computer-aided software, including WinDCP, GIS, MS Office, and MS Project.
  • Quality Management: Sound knowledge and understanding of ISO 17025:2017 standards.

Experience

  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering.
