Job Description

Job Purpose

The Geochemist / Soil Scientist will support the Associate Geochemist in managing and executing small to medium-scale projects or specific tasks within larger projects, focusing on geochemical studies mainly related to the mining industry.

The role involves analyzing large geochemical and water quality datasets and interpreting data related to mining environments. Experience in handling large datasets, including quality control, data interpretation, and reporting, is essential. A general understanding of mining-related environmental issues, geochemical processes, regulations, and policies is also required. The candidate must be able to work independently, managing multiple tasks in a dynamic environment. Occasional fieldwork across Africa will be necessary for site scoping and sampling.

From time to time, the candidate may assist the Land Quality & Remediation Team with projects related to the downstream oil and gas sector.

Minimum Requirements
  • At least 2 years of experience in a consulting environment
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Environmental Geology, Earth Science, or a related field; a postgraduate degree is a plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office, with intermediate skills in Excel and Word, and a willingness to learn various digital applications
  • A Master's qualification in a relevant field is advantageous
  • Knowledge of PHREEQC geochemical modeling is beneficial
  • Willingness and ability to travel and conduct fieldwork
Key Responsibilities
  • Managing and executing small to medium projects or parts of larger projects
  • Interpreting technical data from maps and historical documents
  • Preparing technical geochemical reports
  • Supporting project administration and support duties
  • Conducting desktop research, gap analysis, and baseline studies
  • Preparing site H&S documentation and training/induction materials
  • Performing site work across Africa, including groundwater monitoring, sampling, and soil investigations
  • Undertaking Phase 1 and Phase 2 contaminated land assessments
  • Using geochemical modeling software to analyze source terms
  • Collaborating with clients, subcontractors, and laboratories
