Job description

About CHOSA

CHOSA, established in 2005, takes a holistic and non-directive approach to community development. Our goal is to facilitate the empowerment of marginalised people as they support vulnerable children in their communities. Through community participation and ownership of the development process, CHOSA promotes local action, self-empowerment, and peer-to-peer networking as essential strategies for sustainable, community-driven development.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Fundraising and Project Coordinator to join our team in Johannesburg for a one-year term. This role will support the launch of CHOSA’s pilot site in Johannesburg—the first expansion beyond Cape Town in our 20-year history. If the Johannesburg site becomes a permanent part of CHOSA, an opportunity to extend the one-year contract may be offered.

The coordinator will work closely with an experienced CHOSA team member and split their time between remote work, office work, and on-site work in Johannesburg’s townships to further CHOSA’s mission: identifying and supporting grassroots community-based organisations (CBOs) that serve vulnerable children.

Location: Based in Johannesburg (required)

Start Date: 1 July 2025

Contract Duration: One-year contract, with the potential for extension depending on performance

Time Commitment: 40 hours/week (some weekends required)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: +/- R20 000 per month
  • Medical Reimbursement: Up to R3 500 per month for private medical aid and/or out-of-pocket costs and an additional amount for child dependents.
  • Pension Contribution: R1 000 per month reimbursement
  • Professional Development: Up to R6 500 per year reimbursement
  • Work Expenses: Reimbursement for CHOSA-related expenses (petrol, internet, and other miscellaneous transactions.)

Key Responsibilities

1. Fundraising and Networking

  • Collaborate with CHOSA’s fundraising team (based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Los Angeles)
  • Organise CHOSA’s Johannesburg-based fundraising event
  • Identify and apply for local grant opportunities
  • Build partnerships with like-minded organisations and funders
  • Provide donor updates and organise donor visits to projects
  • Manage in-kind donations and support online donation platforms (Global Giving, PayPal, Facebook, etc.)
  • Represent CHOSA at relevant events

2. Community and Partner Engagement

  • Identify new grassroots CBOs and community groups with a focus on child development
  • Build relationships with communities using democratic, inclusive governance models
  • Encourage and support the establishment of strong, accountable CBO structures

3. Project Coordination with CHOSA Partners (CBOs and communities that CHOSA supports)

  • Meet weekly (or more often) with partners for updates, relationship-building, and support
  • Attend partner and community meetings, including evenings/weekends as needed
  • Facilitate or organise training sessions and workshops
  • Report back to partners and CHOSA staff on activities, finances, and impact

4. Internal Communication and Reporting

  • Submit quarterly fieldwork summary reports to CHOSA General Membership (Board)
  • Attend weekly CHOSA staff meetings and participate in virtual General Membership meetings

5. Organise Monthly Support Groups

  • Collaborate with staff to plan monthly support groups for our partner projects’ founders and staff

6. Shared Responsibilities

  • Work with CHOSA’s bookkeeper to ensure accurate financial reporting
  • Support social media and website content management
  • Assist with management of CHOSA’s email account

Required Qualifications & Skills

Due to the pioneering nature of this role, the successful applicant must be an innovative self-starter with a track record of successful fundraising and/or networking strategies. They must also be able to build rapport and humbly interact with marginalised communities, as this role includes direct work providing capacity-building and other support services to our partners.

  • Experience: 2+ years working with NGOs or community-based organisations
