The World Aquaculture Society is seeking a highly motivated Fisheries Analyst to join their Consultancy Division. This role involves conducting quantitative analyses, developing R scripts for modeling, and engaging in effective communication of scientific findings. Ideal candidates will have a postgraduate degree and strong skills in statistical analysis, particularly in fisheries science.
Key Responsibilities:• Conduct quantitative analyses of commercial fisheries data using advanced statisticalmethods.• Develop, document, and maintain R scripts and functions for data analysis andmodelling.• Apply and interpret statistical frameworks (e.g., maximum likelihood estimation,Bayesian methods, GLMs, GAMs) in real-world fisheries contexts.• Produce scientifically rigorous outputs including reports, technical documents, andvisualisations.• Communicate scientific findings to clients, stakeholders, and team members throughwritten reports, presentations, and meetings.• Contribute to the formulation of new methods for addressing complex fisherieschallenges.• Work independently on analysis tasks while collaborating closely with a broaderscientific and technical team.
Minimum Requirements:• A postgraduate degree (MSc or higher preferred) in Fisheries Science, MarineBiology, Statistics, Ecology, or a related field.• An understanding of fisheries science and related fields.• Demonstrated experience in statistical modelling and fisheries analysis.• High proficiency in R, including writing custom functions and managing largedatasets.• Familiarity with Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood estimation, and modelselection techniques.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explaincomplex results to non-technical audiences.• Proven ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and deliver highquality work on schedule.• Based in South Africa, with the ability to attend occasional in-person meetings.
