Overview

Regional areas

Firefighter positions exist for the use and application of Firefighters within the Fidelity Group to respond and deal with fire related incidents and related emergencies. The main responsibilities include responding to fire incidents, providing firefighting emergency rescue services, rendering basic medical care, fire prevention and training activities, operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus, and performing related work as required to protect lives and property of Fidelity Group clients.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to fires, rescues, and related emergency and non-emergency incidents
  • Respond to incidents involving hazardous substances
  • Extricate and/or release casualties and carry out emergency operations as directed by the level of authority
  • Resuscitate and treat injured persons and carry out emergency operations as directed by the next level of authority
  • Operate a range of equipment to control, manage, and extinguish fires
  • Undertake fire protection duties in situations that potentially threaten lives or property and have available appropriate equipment as directed by supervisors
  • Prepare for emergency incidents and protection duties under guidance, mentorship, and supervision of seniors and officers in charge
  • Participate in training drills, simulation exercises, and physical fitness training as directed
  • Train relevant employees on the theory and practice necessary to fight fires
  • Advise on preventative and corrective actions
  • Implement relevant procedures, strategies, and use proper equipment to promote local or national security activities for protection of data, people, institutions and property
  • Perform basic level maintenance on equipment to ensure operational readiness
  • Check, clean, test, and maintain vehicles and equipment
  • Complete computerized occurrence log to maintain proper daily records
  • Conduct health and safety inspections to maintain a safe work environment
  • Complete pro forma documentation
  • Participate in Departmental Health and Safety Committee meetings
  • Drive and operate a range of heavy and extra heavy specialised vehicles/appliances to or at emergency incidents as directed
  • Operate machinery to hoist, gain access to buildings, and/or extricate victims, equipment, and any other persons at emergency incidents
  • Ensure fire apparatus and associated emergency equipment can be safely and effectively operated to save lives and property
  • Assist with fire and safety training, fire safety inspections, life safety education, and training drills
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act by conducting necessary safety inspections and ensuring subordinates have prescribed protective clothing and adherence to policies to promote personal safety and prevent loss
  • Ensure compliance with prescribed equipment maintenance schedules and effect repairs where possible at shift level to contribute to operational readiness and reduce equipment damage
  • Complete all shift-related administrative routines as per departmental policy and orders
  • Undertake supervisory and line functional personnel-related functions
Qualifications, experience and other competencies
  • Grade 12 as a minimum school qualification
  • IFSAC Accredited
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 2 certification
  • Firefighter II Certification
  • Firefighting training and at least 2–3 years related experience
  • Valid code C1 driver's license with PrDP
  • Advanced driving experience advantageous
  • Medically and physically fit
  • Good understanding and practice of fire prevention procedures
  • Knowledge of firefighting systems
  • Clear criminal record
  • Capability to react within efficient time frames to emergency situations
  • Administration, interpersonal communication, and customer liaison skills
  • Hazmat experience and knowledge essential
  • EMT certification
  • First Aid levels 1 to 3
Core Competencies
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Sound understanding of Hazmat guidelines
  • Sound understanding of the Security Industry and how to act within the code of conduct of the Group and Regulatory Authority
  • Understanding of firefighter instructor applications within an operational role
