Job description

Firefighter
Regional area - Pietermaritzburg
This position involves the use and application of firefighting skills within the Fidelity Group to respond to fire-related incidents.
The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to fire incidents, firefighting, emergency rescue services, basic medical care, fire prevention, training activities, operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus, and all related tasks to protect lives and property of the Fidelity Group clients.
Key responsibilities (not exhaustive):
  • Respond to fires, rescues, and related emergencies
  • Respond to hazardous substances incidents
  • Extricate and release casualties, conduct emergency operations under supervision
  • Resuscitate and treat injured persons as directed
  • Operate firefighting equipment to control and extinguish fires
  • Undertake fire protection duties in situations threatening lives or property
  • Prepare for emergency incidents under supervision
  • Participate in training drills, simulations, and physical fitness exercises
  • Train relevant employees in firefighting theory and practice
  • Advise on preventative and corrective actions
  • Implement procedures and strategies to promote security and safety
  • Perform basic maintenance on equipment
  • Check, clean, test, and maintain vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain proper records of incidents
  • Conduct health and safety inspections
  • Complete administrative documentation
  • Participate in safety committee meetings
  • Drive and operate emergency vehicles and machinery
  • Ensure safe operation of firefighting apparatus and equipment
  • Assist with fire safety training and inspections
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Perform shift-related administrative routines
  • Undertake supervisory and personnel functions
Qualifications and experience:
  • Grade 12 qualification minimum
  • IFSAC Accreditation
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter 2 certification
  • Firefighter II Certification
  • At least 2-3 years firefighting experience
  • Valid code C1 driver’s license with PrDP
  • Advanced driving experience advantageous
  • Physically and medically fit
  • Knowledge of fire prevention procedures and firefighting systems
  • Clear criminal record
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies
  • Good administration, communication, and customer liaison skills
  • Hazmat experience and knowledge
  • EMT certification
  • First Aid Levels 1-3
Core competencies:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of Hazmat guidelines
  • Knowledge of security industry standards and conduct
  • Understanding of firefighter instructor roles within operational contexts
