Job description

A prominent group within the Cape Winelands is looking to employ a Financial Accountant. This group has notable concerns within the Agri, Wine, Hospitality and Property sectors and is a recognised brand.

The ideal candidate will have a finance degree, completed articles (SAICA, CIMA, SAIPA), and preferably some post-articles experience. Experience within the Agriculture or Farming environment will be an added benefit, along with the related system experience.

Purpose of the role :

The Financial Accountant of the farming division, in conjunction with the Head of Finance, is responsible for managing the financial operations of the farm. This role involves applying core accounting principles within the context of agricultural activities, such as crop production, livestock management and equipment utilisation. The financial accountant ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with tax regulations and industry-specific standards.

Working closely with farm managers and stakeholders, the financial accountant provides critical insights into farm profitability, cost efficiency, and cash flow planning. The role also includes navigating the financial implications of agricultural cycles, market volatility, and environmental compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Financial Record Keeping & Reporting

  • Assist in the preparation of financial information up to trail balance.
  • Ensure timely entry of transactions into accounting software (Business Central).
  • Maintain accurate financial records for all farm / agricultural activities. Daily processing of bank accounts, full responsibility for the debtors function, review monthly payments and processing of month-end journals.
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts have proper reconciliations completed, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, assets, bank.
  • Assisting in preparing the monthly management accounts.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist the Head of Finance with the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts in collaboration with farm managers or owners.
  • Assisting with cash flow forecasting to ensure liquidity for operations and investment.
  • Cost Accounting & Analysis

  • Track costs associated with crop production, livestock management, machinery, labour, and other inputs.
  • Taxation & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Maintain proper documentation for audits and inspections.
  • Payroll & HR Accounting

  • Approval of Bi-weekly wage payment files.
  • Process monthly salary and wage journals
  • Inventory & Asset Management

  • Maintain fixed asset register.
  • Calculate depreciation and manage asset replacement planning.
  • Qualifications and Experience :

  • BCom Management Accounting, Finance, Accounting.
  • Professional qualification is highly desirous.
  • AGA(SA), CA(SA), CIMA, or SAIPA qualified.
  • 2+ years of accounting experience.
  • Agricultural industry experience highly valued.
  • Knowledge of agricultural practices, seasonal cycles, and associated cost structures.
  • Proficient in accounting software, experience with Business Central is highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with farm management software (Farmtrace) is a definite benefit.
  • Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
