Applications are invited for the Field Technician - Senior position to be based in Ceres.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The Field Technician Senior’s main duty will be to oversee and lead installations, repairs, and surveys on Wireless or Fibre networks, focusing on more advanced and larger projects.
Key Performance Areas include, but are not limited to:
General:
- Follow set SOPs and procedures.
- Work closely with a Team Leader and Scheduler.
- Maintain project and safety documentation.
- Provide accurate reporting and updates on work done.
- Ensure all relevant stock is available for scheduled work.
- Keep equipment well maintained and in good condition.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety procedures.
- Complete all SHER and OHS documentation.
- Conduct regular inspections with the RF and Fibre Team to locate and repair faults, perform preventative maintenance.
- Fibre Troubleshooting: Splicing, testing, dome management.
- Wireless Troubleshooting: Signal testing on CPEs, access points, bandwidth capacity.
- Advanced Network Troubleshooting: IP conflicts, firewall issues, routing issues.
- Installation of advanced VoIP systems.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Display leadership by mentoring junior staff and helpers.
- Work overtime, weekends, or on emergency call-outs as needed.
- Work at heights (roofs, poles, tall buildings).
- Work in crawl spaces and small areas for installations.
Site Survey:
- Determine client needs, both internal and external.
- Verify signal strength and throughput at high sites.
- Ensure fibre termination points are live and accessible.
- Conduct site walkarounds with clients to understand layout.
- Perform tests to confirm coverage and data capacity.
- Document findings with photos and accurate notes.
- Update tickets promptly with all details and images.
Callout Repairs:
- Confirm issues with clients as per tickets.
- Troubleshoot efficiently and effectively.
- Identify problems affecting fibre or wireless performance and resolve or replace equipment as needed.
- Communicate costs and solutions clearly to clients.
- Ensure client satisfaction post-repair.
- Follow quality control procedures with team leaders.
- Inspect sites for future issues, document, and update records.
Installation:
- Receive and review daily job cards.
- Prepare stock and equipment for installations.
- Meet client needs as per job cards.
- Coordinate with sales and technical teams for adjustments.
- Install fibre and wireless CPEs, including cable runs.
- Test and verify signal quality and equipment functionality.
- Update job cards with technical details and photos.
- Inspect sites for future issues and document accordingly.
Candidate Requirements:
- At least 2 years of fibre optic splicing experience.
- At least 2 years of RF/wireless experience.
- Advanced computer and networking skills; certifications are a plus.
- Experience with troubleshooting tools like OTDR and fusion splicing.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Strong customer service, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, fibre termination, fusion splicing.
- Manual dexterity, ability to work at heights and in challenging environments.
- Self-motivated, organized, with leadership qualities.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
Education:
- Grade 12.
- Additional certifications are advantageous.
