Job description

The IEJ is looking for a passionate junior programme officer / programme officer to support the implementation of the IEJ's annual Feminist Economics Summer School (FESS).

The Feminist Economics Summer School is a workstream within the African Feminist Economic Research and Policy Networks project led by a Senior Researcher.

The officer will work closely with the Senior Researcher to execute the 5-day event and post-summer school research activities.

The post-summer school activities include networking and learning opportunities that the school creates for the cohort of participants after the FESS.

ABOUT THE FEMINIST ECONOMIC SUMMER SCHOOL
The FESS project, now in its fifth year, aims to strengthen the incorporation of feminist economic approaches and methodologies in African economic and social policy research and advocacy through capacity-building activities.

This is done through a 5-day training in feminist economic theoretical and methodological interventions.

The FESS is a flagship event in the IEJ's calendar.

The most recent Summer School was hosted in Kampala, Uganda collaboratively with our partners Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), MISR, and SIHA in Uganda.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the Senior Researcher to execute the following activities:

  1. Capacity building
  2. Conceptualisation of the event.
  3. Updating the FESS training material database.
  4. Drafting and editing FESS training materials, such as programmes and slides.
  5. Contribute to the drafting of speakers' invitation letters.
  6. Attending the Summer School to take notes and facilitate feedback sessions.
  7. Develop post-FESS activities with the cohort.

Programmatic Administration
Assist the Project Administrators with contacting speakers, track speakers' responses and update the database to ensure that the right people are contracted. Assisting with other administrative tasks as determined by the Senior Researcher.

Logistical support
Assisting with logistical tasks as determined by the Senior Researcher.

Organisational responsibilities
Coordinating organisational webinars alongside internal training workshops.

Required skills and experience include:

  1. Honours / master's degree in economics, sociology, anthropology, gender or development studies, or political economy.
  2. Strong written communication skills.

CONTRACT
The contract will be a 1-year full-time contract beginning as soon as possible.

SALARY (TCTC)
Starting annual salary for:

  1. Junior Program Officer: R - R.
  2. Program Officer: R - R.

The IEJ's new Remuneration Policy sets the salary ranges as per the above. However, we are currently in a phased three-year process of moving from existing (lower) ranges to the new ranges stipulated in the Remuneration Policy. Along with other staff members, the salary would be increased annually until it sat within the new stipulated (inflation-adjusted) range.

LOCATION
The position is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The IEJ currently operates on a hybrid work model where all staff are expected to be in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This may change in future.
