Job Purpose

The purpose of a farm manager job is multifaceted and includes overseeing all aspects of farm operations to ensure efficient and successful production.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Operational management - Manipulation of vineyards
  2. Full management of vineyard, including:
    1. Pruning of Vines
    2. Harvest Control
    3. Harvesting of grapes
    4. Crop protection and crop promotion
    5. Fungicide and insecticide sprays
    6. Any other related crop protection sprays that may be used in the production of table grapes
    7. Fertilization and Soil amendments
    8. Taking soil and leaf samples at given times
    9. Any soil corrections for mature as well as new vines
    10. Fertilization of saplings
    11. Any nutrition-related applications that accompany table grape cultivation
    12. Planting of new vineyards
    13. Ground preparation related tasks
    14. Liaison with soil experts and laboratories
    15. Taking soil samples
    16. Supervision of land preparation machines
    17. Erection of Gazebo System
    18. Measuring block
    19. Planting of poles
    20. Construction of arbour system
    21. Water management
    22. Irrigation
    23. Draining of wet spots
  3. Financial Management
    1. Budgeting and financial planning for the farm
    2. Ensure that all resources are allocated effectively
    3. Monitor expenses
  4. General management functions
    1. General staff management and motivation
    2. Address escalated people related issues and progressive disciplinary matters
    3. Control and management of vehicles
    4. Understanding and keeping track of relevant audit
Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications: B. Sc Agric or similar tertiary qualification would be advantageous.

Experience: A minimum of 10 years practical seasonal experience in the production of table grapes and farm management.

Must be able to draw up a farm's budget and manage the budget using computer programs (MS Office).

Other knowledge and skills required:

  • Good planning ability (short, medium, and long term).
  • Knowledge of all audits.
  • Must be able to manage costs effectively.
  • Knowledge of cultivating plants to produce fruit to the required standards.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A work ethic that prizes accuracy, thoroughness, drive, and integrity.
  • Demonstrable management and leadership qualities.
  • Must be physically fit to perform the work.
  • Valid Driver's licence.
  • Able to speak, read and write in English or Afrikaans (Ability to speak Xhosa or Sotho will count in your favour).
  • Strong numerical skills.
  • Strong organisation and planning skills in meeting deadlines.
  • An action-oriented approach with an intense sense of accountability.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Self-disciplined, collaborator.
  • Hard worker with a strong sense of accountability & resilience.
