Overview Of The Department

The Faculty of Education’s vision is underpinned by the broader vision of the University, namely, to be a leading research-intensive university in Africa, recognised internationally for its quality, relevance, and impact and for developing people, creating knowledge, and making a difference locally and globally. As the largest contact Faculty of Education in the country and a leader in teacher education and training, its core function is to train quality teachers, education psychologists, leaders, and managers in education. Its programmes are strengthened by the partnerships established with the Department of Basic Education and its collaboration with departments and faculties within the University of Pretoria. The Faculty provides education and training for professionals in pre-primary, primary, and high schools; clinics and hospitals; business and industry; government and non-governmental organisations; and the adult and community education sectors.

There are five departments, six research centres, and several units, including the University of Pretoria Pre-University Academy (UP-PUA). The Faculty offers world-class teaching and learning and is engaged in cutting-edge research related to education. The Faculty aims to produce technologically inclined and literate teachers to respond to a rapidly changing teaching environment in schools.

POSITION

The University seeks to appoint a Faculty Manager in the Dean’s Office. As part of the Faculty management team, the Faculty Manager will play an essential supportive role and assist the Dean in developing and managing strategic and operational initiatives of the Faculty and managing the risk register, as well as fulfilling other functions.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Dean in l eading and managing faculty-wide strategic projects to ensure alignment with institutional goals and timely delivery.
  • Oversee risk management and compliance by identifying potential risks and ensuring adherence to university policies.
  • Implement effective monitoring and evaluation systems to track progress and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Coordinate daily faculty operations to ensure efficient workflow, resource use, and timely execution of initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including government bodies, industry partners, and alumni.
  • Support student engagement and well-being through collaboration with Student Affairs and incorporation of student feedback.
  • Drive faculty transformation by implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies across policies and programs.
  • Oversee financial planning and ensure compliance with budgeting and expenditure regulations.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives and secure external funding through donor engagement and strategic partnerships.
  • Support human resources, financial management and student admin functions, including performance management, conflict resolution, and staff development.
  • Promote innovation in faculty operations by integrating best practices and digital tools to enhance effectiveness.
  • Represent the Dean’s Office in guiding research initiatives and identifying funding opportunities for academic projects.

Minimum Requirements

Educational Background:

  • A postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 or higher in Project Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education Management, or a closely related field.

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in project coordination or management, preferably within a higher education or academic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, risk management, monitoring and evaluation, and operational oversight.
  • Proven track record of stakeholder engagement, including managing partnerships, marketing efforts, fundraising, and alumni relations.

Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

A suitable candidate must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead and coordinate complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment, mitigation, and operational oversight within an academic or institutional setting.
  • Strategic and innovative thinking, with the ability to align faculty objectives with broader institutional goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, complemented by strong interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
  • High level of competence in digital literacy and the use of technology to support project execution and reporting.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, ensuring effective prioritisation and execution of tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all responsibilities.
  • Sound understanding of university systems, academic governance, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of transformation imperatives in higher education, with a clear grasp of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
  • Strong competencies in project design and implementation, data analysis, and reporting for strategic decision-making
  • A valid drivers license

Added Advantages And Preferences

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field will be considered an advantage.
  • Certification in Project Management will be a strong recommendation.
  • Proven experience working at a middle management level in higher education

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
