Chair the Audit Risk and Improvement Committee of City of Newcastle

  1. Chair the Audit Risk and Improvement Committee of City of Newcastle.
  2. Provide expert leadership and advice on risk governance and controls.
  3. Term: 4 years.
  4. Meetings: Five per year, conducted face-to-face and virtually.

City of Newcastle (CN) is inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals for appointment as an external independent member to the Council's Audit Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC).

As Chairperson, you will need to understand and observe the requirements of the Office of Local Governments Guidelines for risk management and internal audit for local government in NSW, as well as CN's ARIC Charter. The ARIC plays a key role in the governance framework, assisting the Council in fulfilling its governance and oversight responsibilities.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Business, finance, legal, compliance, risk management, internal audit.
  • Leadership, relationship-building, and clear communication.
  • Governance, financial reporting, and local government knowledge.
  • Ethical judgment, independence, and commitment to the role.
  • Experience on public sector audit committees, preferably in local government.

Chairperson Responsibilities

  • Attend, participate in, and lead ARIC meetings.
  • Review and understand information provided to the committee.
  • Apply analytical skills, objectivity, and judgment to assign actions after discussions.
  • Provide industry insights during meetings.
  • Act in the best interests of CN.
  • Raise and address tough issues, express opinions frankly, and pursue independent inquiries.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with CN.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
  • Lead effective committee meetings.
  • Oversee CN's internal audit function.
  • Attend and present at annual and strategic assessment meetings with the council.
  • Review and approve minutes of ARIC meetings.
  • Inform the council of emerging risks.
