Job description

The South African Sugar Association (SASA) has a permanent vacancy for an Export Accounting Officer based at the Sugar Terminal in Maydon Warf, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The hedging, marketing, and shipping of South Africa's bulk raw sugar are performed by the Sugar Markets and Logistics Division of SASA. The division focuses on achieving maximum net proceeds within an acceptable level of risk. We are currently seeking a strong Export Accounting Officer to work closely with the exports team, other internal departments, and milling companies. This position reports to the Commodity Trader.

The overall purpose of this job is to apply accounting principles and commercial understanding to execute accounting and administrative functions linked to SASA's export function.

Division: Sugar Markets and Logistics

The incumbent will contribute to two significant functions of SASA:

  1. Export Commercial Accounting Information Management function:
  • Coordinate the process of gathering, maintaining, and preparing information related to SASA's long or surplus sugar position.
  • Coordinate the requirements involved in maintaining the accuracy and completeness of information of the Derivative Hedge Book and priced position.
  • Provide information to Treasury for decision-making.
  • Prepare various schedules used for Export Equalization in terms of the RV Programme.
  • Manage the Millers Allocation process in accordance with the Main Principles Document.
  • Coordinate the administrative, interactive, and procedural requirements associated with the Division of Proceeds Coordination Process.
  • Coordinate the administrative, interactive, and procedural requirements associated with the Local Market redistribution process.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of information related to the commercial aspects of ship loading operations.
  • Coordinate the production of freight documentation within specified timeframes.
  • Implement and oversee the Export department's credit insurance policy effectively.
  • Maintain accurate shipping records.
Requirements:
  • A 3-year tertiary commercial qualification with management accounting as a major.
  • Ideally supported by 4 years of experience in international logistics or freight handling.
  • Experience in treasury and export trading is an advantage.

  • Interest in commodity trading and hedging.
  • Willingness to develop a career in the commodity field.
  • Strong organizational and quality orientation, with flexibility and commitment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for research and market analysis presentations.
