Equipment Operator III - Street Transportation Department

About This Position
The Equipment Operator III position requires considerable skill in operating heavy motorized equipment and constant attention to safety. The position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating 10-yard dump trucks, vactors, water trucks, tractor mowers, and other equipment. Equipment Operators may be assigned to labor work or other job assignments below their classification when not assigned to equipment. Applicants who successfully apply will receive an invitation to participate in the demonstration exam.

Vacancies
The Street Transportation Department currently has several Equipment Operator III vacancies in two sections:

  • Street Maintenance Division: Maintains nearly 5,000 miles of public roadways, performing asphalt and pothole repair, street resurfacing, debris removal, street sweeping, landscape maintenance, and storm response.
  • Traffic Services Division (Striping Section): Installs and maintains traffic signs and pavement markings over a network of 5,000 miles, ensuring safety and mobility.

Demonstration Exam
The exam varies by section:
- Street Maintenance: 7-Step Air Brake Test, dump truck operation, verbal explanation.
- Traffic Services: 7-Step Air Brake Test, driving course in a striping truck.

Ideal Candidate

  • Knowledge of hydraulically operated equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and skillfully.
  • Knowledge of traffic barricade setup and lane closure procedures.

Salary
Pay Range: $23.74 - $35.08/hr
Hiring Range: $23.74 - $30.31/hr

Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of relevant departmental training or equivalent experience.
- Valid Class A CDL.
- Criminal background check required.
- Ability to operate vehicles safely, with valid license and insurance.
- Pre-screening and driving record checks.

Working Conditions & Requirements
- Pass ADOT medical exam and possess valid CDL with Tanker endorsement.
- May work as Laborer.
- Drug testing required.
- May require irregular hours, outdoor work in extreme conditions, lifting up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with various heavy equipment and landscaping tools.
- Ability to lead small teams and provide instructions.
