Location: Somerset West, South Africa

Job Purpose:

Ensure the reliability and performance of space hardware by conducting comprehensive environmental tests and analysing results to meet industry standards and safety regulations.

Responsibilities:

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, project managers, production technicians and quality assurance personnel
  • Communicate test results and findings effectively to stakeholders

Test Planning and Coordination

  • Understand and implement test plans and procedures for environmental testing of space hardware
  • Coordinate with engineering teams to define test instructions and objectives

Test Execution

  • Conduct environmental tests such as thermal, vibration, shock, and vibration tests on satellite components and systems
  • Operate and maintain environmental test equipment, including thermal chambers, vibration tables, and shock testers.

Data Collection and Analysis

  • Monitor and record test data, ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Analyse test results to identify any anomalies or deviations from expected performance.

Equipment Maintenance and Calibration

  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration of test equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test results
  • Troubleshoot and repair test equipment as needed

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure all testing activities comply with relevant industry standards and safety regulations
  • Implement and adhere to safety protocols during test operations
  • Understand and adhere to cleanroom procedures.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Collect test reports from lab equipment, including data analysis, findings, and recommendations
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all tests conducted and results obtained

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for improving test processes and equipment
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in environmental testing technologies and methodologies

Required Qualifications:

Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field

Required Experience:

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in conducting environmental tests such as thermal, vibration, shock, and vacuum tests on aerospace or space hardware
  • Proven experience in operating, maintaining, and calibrating environmental test equipment
  • Experience in collecting, analysing, and interpreting test data to ensure accurate and reliable results
  • Experience in working with detailed technical work instructions and documentation of test procedures and results.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations relevant to environmental testing in the space industry

Required Technical Competencies

  • Proficiency in operating thermal chambers, vibration tables, and vacuum chambers
  • Expertise in collecting, analysing, and interpreting test data to identify performance trends and anomalies
  • Ability to develop and implement detailed test plans and procedures tailored to specific space hardware requirements
  • Skills in maintaining, calibrating, and troubleshooting environmental test equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability
  • Familiarity with data analysis software and tools used for environmental testing, such as LabVIEW or MATLAB
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations, such as ISO 14644 for cleanrooms and MIL-STD-810 for environmental engineering considerations
