JUNIOR ENVIRONMENTAL & RISK OFFICER - HOWICK
Our client in Howick is seeking a Junior Environmental & Risk Officer to support sustainability initiatives and ensure full SHER (Safety, Health, Environment & Risk) compliance.
Key responsibilities include adhering to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, implementing risk control measures, developing environmental policies, and managing SHER systems and reporting.

Minimum Requirements:
- 3 years of experience.
- NDip/ Degree in Environmental Management Sciences.
- SAMTRAC (advantageous).
- 3+ Years as an Environmental & Risk Officer.
- Experience in the implementation of ISO 14001-2015 & ISO 45001.
- Extensive knowledge of ISO 14001:2015, NEMA, OHSA, and other environmental standards.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all incidents relevant to SHER are reported, investigated, corrected, and learnings disseminated.
- Ensure that all relevant environmental authorizations, operating licenses/permits are applied for, up-to-date, and compliance to conditions is monitored.
- Ensure the company is compliant with all applicable SHER legislation and other requirements.
- Monitor SHER performance by gathering relevant data and producing statistical reports.
- Ensure that all legal appointments are in place as per applicable legislation.
- Develop and maintain the occupational health management and monitoring program.
- Manage all SHER site surveys, audits, and assessments.
- Drive the culture of quality, health, safety, and environment through awareness, communication, and training initiatives.
- Manage all SHER-related training requirements.
- Assess the site's sustainability performance, identify key strategies like energy efficiency, resource recovery, waste reduction, etc.
- Develop plans and controls to prevent pollution, respond to emergencies, and ensure business continuity.
- Ensure compliance with system protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Review compliance with SOPs to ensure operational excellence.
- Provide audit reports, identify non-conformities, and implement corrective actions.
- Review the effectiveness of corrective measures.
- Maintain good relations with internal and external stakeholders.
- Report on initiatives to reduce carbon footprint, GHG, NAEIS, etc.
- Propose SHER improvements, corrective actions, resources, and implementation plans for NCRs.
