Overview

SUMMARY :

Responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the Organization's environmental management system on a project / site level to reduce any impact on the environment, in line with current environmental legislation and international standards (ISO 14001) as well as the project specific environmental authorization (EA), and environmental management programme (EMPr).

Qualifications

Minimum Education :

Tertiary education in the environmental discipline

Additional Qualifications :

SAMTRAC, International Management Systems – ISO 14001 Internal Auditor, EAPASA or SACNASP registration is advantageous

Minimum Work Experience :

3 years’ experience as Environmental Officer or within the Environmental field

Responsibilities

Environment

  • Implementation of environmental policies, procedures and aspect / impact assessments on a project
  • Implement policies, procedures and aspect / impact assessment on Environmental in accordance with applicable legislative requirements, regulations, standards as well as Organization requirements
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with policies, procedures and aspect / impact assessments in accordance with applicable legislative requirements, regulations, standards as well as Organisation requirements
Environment (continued)
  • Investigate environmental incidents and non-compliance events, liaise with parties and ensure all documentation is updated.
  • Conduct regular environmental audits and assessments of project activities to identify potential risks and areas for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative and client requirements.
  • Conduct site inspection to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of environmental documentation and compliance evidence.
  • Environmental objectives and targets are monitored and documented.
  • Implement and maintain compliance with the project specific environment authorisation, and environmental management programme (EMPr).
  • Implement and maintain ISO 14001 at site level.
  • Monitor air quality, water quality, soil conditions, biodiversity, and waste management practices.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of environmental projects, including waste management, recycling programs, and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Identify aspects, assess impacts and implement effective control measures.
  • Implement necessary corrective action and monitor effectiveness.
  • Oversee rehabilitation and restoration activities for disturbed areas.
  • Support the integration of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles into operations.
Stakeholder Relationships
  • Advise employees, visitors and contractors / suppliers regarding legislative, organization and Client requirements with regards to the environmental industry.
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with all external and internal parties.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to promote environmental awareness and best practices.
  • Represent employees on matters regarding environmental matters.
  • Conduct training and awareness sessions for employees on environmental issues and best practices.
Compliance with EMS
  • Refer to the relevant SHEQ department EMS documentation (career path, roles, responsibilities, integrated management system such as document control, monitoring and measuring, non-conformances, management of change, etc.).
