Job PurposeThe Environmental Engineer ensures compliance with environmental regulations while developing sustainable solutions for energy and petrochemical operations. The role focuses on minimizing ecological impact through waste management, emissions control, and environmental monitoring, while supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems.Key Responsibilities1. Environmental Compliance & Permitting- Ensure adherence toNEMA, NWA, and AQA regulationsin South Africa.
- Prepare and submitEnvironmental Impact Assessments (EIAs),Waste Management Licenses (WML), andAtmospheric Emission Licenses (AEL).
- Maintain compliance withISO 14001Environmental Management Systems.
2. Pollution Control & Waste Management- Design and optimizeeffluent treatment systemsfor refineries/petrochemical plants.
- Implementcarbon capture, flare gas recovery, and VOC reductioninitiatives.
- Oversee hazardous waste disposal in line withSANS 10234.
3. Monitoring & Reporting- Conductair/water/soil quality samplingand interpret lab results.
- Prepareannual environmental performance reportsfor NERSA/DWS.
- TrackGHG emissionsusing IPCC methodologies for carbon tax reporting.
4. Sustainability & ESG Initiatives- Developdecarbonization roadmapsaligned with company net-zero targets.
- Supportgreen hydrogen, biofuels, and circular economyprojects.
- Conductlife cycle assessments (LCA)for new projects.
5. Incident Response- Leadspill containment and remediationefforts.
- Investigate environmental incidents usingroot cause analysis (RCA).
Required Qualifications- BEng/BSc in Environmental/Chemical/Civil Engineering.

Essential Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills- Regulatory Knowledge:NEMA, NWA, AQA, and international standards (EPA, IFC).
- Modeling Tools:AERMOD (air dispersion), WATERGEMS (hydrology), SimaPro (LCA).
- Field Techniques:Stack emission testing, groundwater monitoring, biodiversity surveys.
Management Skills- Stakeholder engagement with DFFE, municipalities, and communities.
- ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, TCFD, CDP).
- Budgeting for remediation projects.
Experience Requirements- 3-5 years in oil & gas, mining, or heavy industry.
- Hands-on experience with:
