Environmental Compliance Officer

A Big5 Game Reserve situated in the Lowveld part of the open system Greater Kruger National Park is seeking an experienced Environmental Compliance Officer to join its team. The Reserve strives to create an environment where wilderness thrives, the land is regenerated and surrounding communities prosper. Main Purpose The Environmental Compliance Officer goal is to ensure that all relevant activities and developments comply with South African environmental legislation. The successful candidate will provide environmental compliance support and guidance to management, landowners, lodge operators, developers and contractors. The manager needs to monitor compliance, identifying environmental risks, addressing non-compliance, combined with maintaining accurate environmental records and also escalating matters to management and regulatory authorities when necessary. The role is essential in ensuring that development and operational activities protect the Reserves ecological integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess activities and proposed developments against applicable environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
• Provide practical compliance guidance to management, landowners, lodge operators, developers and contractors.
• Maintain a central register of all Environmental Authorisations (EAs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs).
• Ensure that all relevant authorisation conditions and environmental commitments are understood and implemented by responsible parties.
• Review EIAs and participate in the environmental assessment process as an interested and affected party.
• Conduct initial environmental screening and prepare compliance reports as part of the planning process for lodge developments.
