The successful candidate will provide inspirational technical leadership, promote long-term architectural thinking and guide engineering practitioners across multiple initiatives to ensure alignment between products, programmes and organisational objectives.

This role requires a holistic approach to solution design, balancing business requirements, technology capabilities, operational constraints, risk and long-term sustainability.

The Engineering Lead will work closely with key stakeholders, software designers and engineering teams to deliver robust, scalable and sustainable technical solutions while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • End-to-End Solution Design: Develop integrated technical solutions across multiple technologies, taking into consideration people, processes, systems, data and organisational requirements.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical direction and leadership across multiple initiatives, guiding engineering practitioners and ensuring alignment with product and programme objectives.
  • Solution Analysis: Analyse complex problems and formulate practical, achievable solutions that align with organisational architecture, standards, constraints and operational requirements.
  • Architecture and Governance: Present proposed solutions through relevant governance forums, engage with domain and technology specialists, and secure the necessary technical acceptance and stakeholder buy-in.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate, communicate and negotiate effectively with key stakeholders to establish alignment and influence technical decisions.
  • Solution Decomposition and Planning: Break down complex solutions into manageable components, assisting with work sequencing, scheduling and identifying resource requirements.
  • Technical Design: Develop and refine solution designs, contribute to functional and non-functional requirements, and assist software designers with lower-level technical designs.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Investigate and resolve technical delivery challenges, supporting engineering teams in identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
  • Risk and Constraint Management: Evaluate technical constraints, dependencies and risks, making informed trade-offs to balance business needs, technical feasibility and long-term sustainability.
  • Sustainable Engineering: Design robust, maintainable and future‑ready solutions while continuously enhancing the technical assets affected by solution delivery.
  • Product and Long-Term Thinking: Apply a product management mindset to solution design, considering future business needs, technology evolution and the long‑term value of technical investments.
  • Coaching and Mentorship: Coach, mentor and develop software engineering practitioners, supporting technical growth, knowledge sharing and the development of engineering capabilities.
  • Engineering Practice Development: Contribute to the growth and maturity of the engineering lead practice through collaboration, knowledge sharing and participation in relevant professional forums or communities of practice.
  • Organisational Alignment: Drive alignment across areas of responsibility, ensuring that technical initiatives support broader organisational priorities and strategic objectives.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve business processes, operating models and systems through innovation, agile thinking and ongoing evaluation of emerging technologies.
  • Professional Development: Stay abreast of developments in technology and IT architecture while pursuing continuous learning and personal growth.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in similar engineering leadership or technical solution design roles.
  • Strong understanding of IT architecture and technical concepts.
  • Experience in systems analysis and design.
  • Ability to develop and communicate integrated end-to-end technical solutions across multiple technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with technical and business stakeholders to achieve solution alignment.
  • Experience evaluating technical risks, constraints, dependencies and alternative approaches.
  • Ability to guide technical teams and support software designers in developing effective solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision‑making capabilities.
  • Proven ability to balance immediate delivery requirements with long‑term technical sustainability.

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications:

  • BSc in Computer Science, BCom in Information Systems, or a relevant equivalent qualification.
  • A relevant professional qualification at an appropriate degree level.
