Job summary

Communicate Engineering is seeking a Design Engineer focused on railway construction projects in South Africa. The role requires a BSc/BEng or BTech in Civil Engineering and registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.

You will drive design and development, coordinate with architects and contractors, and ensure compliance with project specs, standards and budgets. With over ten years of experience, you will lead the production of civil infrastructure designs, employ CAD/Civil 3D and BIM

Qualifications

• Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer.
• At least ten years of experience.
• Five of the ten years post–registration in planning, preparing/managing civil infrastructure designs and delivery on multi-disciplinary projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop railway construction projects with civil specifications and designs based on client requirements and standards.
• Collaborate with architects, contractors and other professionals to validate feasibility and alignment with client specs.
• Refine designs using CAD, Civil 3D and BIM tools to create 3D models and animations.
• Conduct feasibility studies and cost–benefit analyses for proposed designs and construction techniques.
• Produce and maintain project documentation, including reports, drawings and specs.
• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, safety, reliability and sustainability standards.
• Work with the multi-disciplinary team to meet timelines and budgets while upholding quality.
• Identify process improvements and cost-saving opportunities for senior management.
• Lead project meetings and provide guidance to team members.
• Maintain transparent stakeholder communication on progress and milestones.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. The job focuses on design and development of railway construction projects, requiring the development of civil construction project specifications and designs based on customer requirements and design standards.
2. Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other construction professionals to validate design feasibility and ensure alignment with client project specifications.
3. Utilize working knowledge of CAD software and other engineering tools to refine construction project designs, including the creation of 3D models and animations using CAD, Civil 3D, and BIM software.
4. Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses to evaluate the viability of proposed designs and construction techniques.
5. Develop and maintain comprehensive project and contract documentation, encompassing design reports, drawings, and specifications.
6. Ensure compliance of construction projects with statutory and regulatory requirements, while upholding safety, reliability, and sustainability standards.
7. Work collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary project team to ensure timely and budget-conscious completion of construction projects, adhering to defined quality standards.
8. Identify opportunities for process enhancements and cost savings, presenting recommendations to senior project management team members.
9. Conduct regular project team meetings, providing guidance and support to multi-disciplinary team members.
10. Maintain transparent communication with all project stakeholders, ensuring they are informed of project progress and any adjustments in project planning or milestones.

Skills & Experience

• Registered with ECSA as a Professional Engineer.
• At least ten years’ experience.
• Five of the ten years post professional registration (Pr Eng/ Pr Tech Eng) should be in planning, preparing/managing designs and delivery of civil infrastructure scope within multi-disciplinary projects including bulk earthworks, roads, drainage networks, including Construction Management experience.

Qualification

• BSc/BEng Degree or BTech (Civil).
