Job Advertisement : Energy Specialist (Transmission Lines and Substation Engineering)

The Energy Specialist will support our project packaging, operations, sales, leadership, and marketing teams in packaging projects and innovative solutions in the electricity transmission and renewable energy sectors.

The role will support the Transport Department and Operations in the rail sector.

Provide comprehensive advisory, economic, engineering design, and project management services by establishing options, supporting economic & financial viability, defining preferred solutions, design criteria, and implementing the preparation of specifications, design computations, drawings, models, and bills of materials in accordance with project requirements, including detailed calculations.

Analyze vendor or subcontractor designs for specific equipment/solutions against performance outcomes and client requirements.

Supervise activities involved in project design, including project management support and construction supervision.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  1. Business Development and Support (50%)
  2. Collaborate with Project Packaging team and stakeholders to identify opportunities and develop packaged solutions.
  3. Develop package solutions for key clients.
  4. Support sales and proposal activities, including contributing to bid/proposal documentation.
  5. Build and maintain a network of developers/EPC contractors.
  6. Establish a trusted advisor role with industry stakeholders.
  1. Internal Project Management, Health and Safety, Administration, and Quality Procedures (10%)
  2. Ensure compliance with company procedures for project registration and risk analysis.
  3. Maintain an auditable trail during the project lifecycle in accordance with Quality Management Procedures.
  4. Adhere to Health and Safety requirements on-site and in the workplace.
  1. Project Delivery (40%)
  2. Produce feasibility studies and client proposals.
  3. Lead technical advisory in rail and related energy programs.
  4. Manage and coordinate projects cost-effectively.
  5. Develop custom data models and design solutions as needed.
  6. Follow iX QMS processes and policies.
  7. Identify and mitigate technical, financial, and regulatory risks.
  8. Ensure compliance with energy, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  9. Work with legal and compliance teams on contracts, permits, and agreements.
  1. Training and Mentoring
  2. Participate in professional development and assist in training registered engineers/technologists.
  1. Leadership and Relations
  2. Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, demonstrate professionalism, and develop leadership skills.
  3. Manage departmental administrative matters and budgets.
  4. Uphold iX values and build the brand.

Ensure compliance with core competencies such as health, safety, environment, action orientation, relationship building, customer focus, adaptability, integrity, leadership, and technical skills.

Education, Language & Qualifications

  • A graduate qualification in engineering (M Eng or equivalent).
  • Professional Engineer or equivalent.
  • PMP and/or Pr.CPM qualification/registration is advantageous.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • At least 15 years of technical and practical experience in infrastructure, rail, and energy projects, including high and medium voltage transmission, distribution, substations, and SSEG.
  • Proficiency with software such as MS Office, AutoCAD, Helioscope, HomerPro, PLS CADD, DigSilent/PSSE.
  • Knowledge of construction framework contracts is preferred.
  • Experience in energy system design, including OHTE, transmission, and substations.
  • Knowledge in mini-grid system design, including generators and storage, is beneficial.
  • Ability to perform condition assessments and remaining useful life calculations.
  • Willingness to travel and accept field assignments.
  • Effective team working and communication skills.
  • Basic financial analysis and modeling knowledge.
  • Engagement in professional associations is preferred.
