Electrical Engineer– Substation – Cape Town

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer to join a High Voltage Project Engineering Consulting Company. The role involves the design, specification, and commissioning of protection, control, and automation systems for High-Voltage Substations.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in substation protection and control, acting as a consulting engineer and providing technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle from concept to commissioning.

Education Requirements

• BEng or BTech in Electrical Engineering
• Registration with ECSA or eligibility for registration is advantageous

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of experience in protection and control for high-voltage substations
• Experience in:
  • Protection and control scheme design
  • Metering scheme design
  • SCADA integration
  • Fault studies and protection setting calculations
  • Substation automation systems
  • Fault analysis and reporting

Responsibilities

• Create or evaluate technical designs and documentation for substation protection and control systems across MV, HV, and EHV voltage levels
• Lead the development of protection and control solutions, from initial concepts and schematics to on-site supervision during installation and commissioning
• Conduct system performance analyses, fault investigations, and protection setting calculations
• Ensure all engineering outputs conform to international standards (IEC, SANS, NRS), client requirements, and project specifications
• Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and contractors to ensure smooth project delivery
• Assist in the selection and procurement of protection and control equipment
• Participate in and validate testing processes, including factory and site acceptance testing, and commissioning activities
• Support operational substations through troubleshooting, diagnostics, and maintenance when needed
• Produce detailed engineering reports, technical documentation, and as-built records
