Job Specification : Electrical Controls (Design and Instrumentation) Engineer

Position Overview : Our client in the solar and renewable energy sector is seeking an experienced and innovative Electrical Controls (Design and Instrumentation) Engineer to join their dynamic team based in Roodepoort, Johannesburg.

This role is ideal for a professional with a strong background in designing and implementing electrical control systems and instrumentation solutions, particularly in renewable energy applications.

Key Responsibilities :

1. Design, develop, and test electrical control systems and instrumentation for industrial, commercial, and renewable energy applications.
2. Create detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts using CAD software.
3. Select, configure, and program PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and other control devices.
4. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate control systems into larger projects, including Micro Grids.
5. Specify and source appropriate instrumentation and components, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
6. Troubleshoot and optimize existing control systems to improve efficiency and reliability.
7. Design and manage systems involving generators, battery energy storage solutions, and PV installations.
8. Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, and testing protocols.
9. Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and maintenance phases.
10. Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in electrical controls and renewable energy systems.

Required Qualifications and Skills :

1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
2. 3+ years of experience in electrical control system design and instrumentation.
3. Proficiency in CAD software for electrical design (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
4. Hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI development, and SCADA integration.
5. Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet / IP, Profibus).
6. Familiarity with international standards and codes (e.g., IEC, NEC).
7. Good understanding of generators, battery energy storage solutions, PV systems (Micro Grids), electrical distribution MV and LV, and electrical metering.
8. Background in power plant control systems or PLC automation.
9. Technologically advanced with the ability to adapt to new innovations in the field.
10. Additional certificates in solar energy are highly beneficial.
11. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
12. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.

Preferred Qualifications :

1. Experience with DCS systems and advanced process control strategies.
2. Certification in instrumentation and control engineering.
3. Background in industries such as manufacturing, renewable energy, or process automation.

Location : Roodepoort mainly and sometimes in Rosebank office, Johannesburg

Salary range : R35 -R80 CTC a month (depending on experience)

Starting date : As soon as possible.
