Job description

Job Title: Database Administrator

Location: Johannesburg

Reports to: Head of Database Management

Role Description: This technical role involves providing high-quality and timely database management support to ensure the availability, stability, and performance of data centers, cloud platforms, and corporate systems.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Database Management for MS SQL, Azure, Sybase, and Oracle.

Organizational Design: Part of the CIO department, reporting to the regional Head of Database Management.

Specific Role Responsibilities:

  1. Design: Ensure database environments are designed following best practices for resilience and availability to meet SLAs.
  2. Availability: Maintain uptime SLAs through issue resolution and scheduled maintenance.
  3. Performance: Monitor and optimize database performance, capacity, and growth.
  4. Information Security: Implement security policies, controls, and conduct risk assessments.
  5. Business Continuity: Ensure backups are regular and tested; participate in BCP & DR tests; document resilience and backup plans.
  6. Training: Develop technical skills and mentor team members.
  7. Project Work: Implement projects within timelines, working with multinational teams.
  8. Budget: Suggest cost-reduction measures.

Experience required:

  • Degree or equivalent industry certifications and relevant experience.
  • DBA certifications are advantageous.
  • Experience in database installation, patching, management, performance tuning, reorganization, on Windows, AIX, Linux.
  • Knowledge of scripting on AIX and Windows.
  • Strong interest in latest technologies and proven project implementation skills.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and ability to work independently and in a matrix environment.
