Job description

Job Description: Utility Plant Operator

We are seeking a dedicated Utility Plant Operator to provide operational support and perform basic maintenance on key utility systems, including compressed air systems, industrial steam boilers, chilled water systems, and general utility services. The goal is to ensure the safe, continuous, and efficient operation of the plant's infrastructure in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and other South African regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Daily Operation & Monitoring: Operate and monitor compressor units, steam boilers, water pumps, air dryers, HVAC systems, and cooling towers. Conduct hourly and daily checks, record critical parameters (pressure, temperature, oil levels), and log operational data.
  2. Preventative Maintenance Support: Perform routine tasks such as filter changes, condensate draining, belt inspections, and oil top-up. Assist qualified artisans during scheduled maintenance and shutdowns.
  3. Fault Reporting & Support: Identify and report anomalies such as abnormal sounds, pressure drops, or overheating. Collaborate with Maintenance and Electrical teams during breakdowns or emergency repairs.
  4. Compliance & Safety: Ensure all work complies with OHSA, SANS standards, and SABS safety protocols. Support adherence to Department of Labour requirements for pressure vessel and boiler operation.
  5. Water Quality and Fuel Management: Assist in checking boiler feedwater quality (pH, TDS, hardness). Monitor fuel levels for generators and boilers. Maintain cleanliness and accessibility of utility areas, emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and panels.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Educational Qualification: Grade 12 (Matric) with Maths & Science, N3/N4 Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or National Certificate (NQF Level 4) in Boiler Operation or Plant Maintenance.
  • Work Experience: 2 to 4 years in utilities or maintenance within manufacturing or FMCG sectors. Hands-on experience with boiler operations, compressors, and cooling systems.
  • Certification: Valid Boiler Operator Certificate (for high-pressure steam systems), Basic First Aid / Fire Fighting Certificate (advantageous), valid SA ID or Work Permit.
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Compressor controls, steam generation systems, utility networks
  • Basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting
  • Understanding of SHEQ procedures
  • Physically fit, willing to work in hot/noisy environments
  • Willingness to work rotational shifts, weekends, or public holidays
