Protective Security – Graduate Blast Consultant

Location: Cape Town, SA (Remote)

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full-time

About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic Civil, Structural, or Mechanical engineer to join our expanding design team, specializing in blast modelling, damage assessment, and protection engineering.

Our services support projects worldwide, providing expert advice on a diverse range of structures and materials. The successful candidate will be a recent graduate with a strong academic background in engineering science, ideally with experience in design code-based substantiation using finite element analysis or computational fluid dynamics.

A willingness to learn new methods, software, and blast effects theory is essential. The ability to communicate complex ideas clearly to clients, designers, government advisors, and team members is highly valued.

The role involves supporting projects with security-based recommendations and engineering solutions aligned with a defense in depth strategy. Creativity and innovation are encouraged, and the ability to think critically is important.

Responsibilities
  1. Assist with simulating non-ideal blast loading using CFD, validated by hand calculations.
  2. Assist with dynamic loading response simulations using SDOF methods.
  3. Establish blast loading performance criteria and failure limits for materials and structures.
  4. Perform calculations to quantify human injury and building damage probabilities.
  5. Deliver protection engineering and ensure code compliance.
  6. Contribute to threat and risk assessments for design basis development.
  7. Collaborate with BIM & CAD colleagues for workflow and data management.
  8. Produce analysis reports, statistical summaries, and support client presentations.
  9. Participate in research initiatives related to blast and ballistic loading.
Qualifications
  • Minimum upper second class BEng or equivalent in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Preferably, an MSc, MPhys, MPhil, or PhD in a related field such as materials, physics, FEA, or CFD.
  • Relevant industry experience or strong enthusiasm for learning complex analysis methods.
  • Understanding of structural dynamics, high-strain rate material behavior, and standard design codes (Eurocodes, ASCE, ACI).
  • Knowledge of extreme loading scenarios and standards like UFC-3 02 is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CFD and data processing software (e.g., ANSYS, ParaView) is beneficial.
  • Experience in technical reporting and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Additional Information

The candidate must be willing to pursue professional registration and support business development efforts. Strong communication skills and a proactive attitude are essential. Security screening will be required, including financial screening if applicable.
