Lecturer in Economics and Economic History

The Department of Economics and Economic History at Rhodes University invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

About the Department

The department offers undergraduate to doctoral programmes, including a specialised Master of Commerce in Financial Markets. It emphasizes student-centered teaching and research excellence across various areas such as financial markets, international trade, development, environmental and natural resource economics, and the creative economy. The department's research groups focus on Money, Banking and Financial Markets; Development, Institutions and Labour Markets; and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, with a strong engagement with community and service-learning components.

Main Objectives

All academics are responsible for teaching, research, and community engagement, with responsibilities varying across departments and faculties. They are also expected to undertake administrative, management, and leadership roles within the university.

Minimum Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Economics or equivalent, or a Masters’ degree with a final draft of a Ph.D. in view.
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level; postgraduate teaching experience is an advantage.
  • Expertise in Public Policy, Institutional Economics, and related areas.
  • Emerging research profile with journal publications and conference presentations.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate research.
  • Leadership roles in administration, management, or informal leadership.

Remuneration

Basic pensionable salary: R633,149 per annum
Cost to the university: approximately R826,949 per annum

This is a permanent position, with the possibility of a fixed-term contract of at least three years. The university may choose not to fill the position. Applications are confidential.
