Senior Chemist - Physical Laboratory Supervisor

Reporting to the Laboratory Team Lead, the Senior Chemist is responsible for supervising 2-6 direct reports, including graduate interns and contractors.

The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise, workflow management skills, and leadership abilities to coach and lead a team in a technical environment.

Supervisory Role
  1. Lead a team of 2-6 lab employees (day shift workers, contractors, graduate interns).
  2. Ensure 24-hour coverage at all times.
  3. Manage overtime and leave for direct reports.
  4. Develop individual development plans for team members.
  5. Ensure all staff are trained on testing methods.
  6. Supervise SOP updates to keep procedures current and relevant.
  7. Maintain daily communication with staff and inform them of plant status.
  8. Update staff on testing method changes and QA/QC procedures.
  9. Assist in managing physical lab QA/QC processes.
  10. Oversee lab control samples and recordkeeping in VCC system.
  11. Ensure lab readiness for QA/QC audits.
  12. Update SOPs to comply with ASTM standards and safety requirements.
  13. Manage product Control Document Management System (CDMS) and MSDS documents in collaboration with SHEQ and EVCO departments.
  14. Oversee testing equipment management, calibration, and maintenance.
  15. Coordinate with vendors and technicians for instrument issues.
  16. Assist with equipment procurement and ensure standby equipment for testing.
  17. Assume Lab Team Lead responsibilities when required.
Qualifications
  • B.Sc. degree or Diploma in Analytical Chemistry with at least 10 years of lab experience.

Work Experience: Refinery laboratory experience.

Knowledge and Skills: Testing refinery final products and in-process streams (Diesel, Jet Fuel, Gasoline, LPG, Fuel oil, Bitumen).

Leadership and team management qualities.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and ability to work under pressure.

Capability to coordinate activities and influence stakeholders.
