The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) leads South Africa's involvement in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA) project, focusing on engineering, science, and construction.
SARAO, a National Facility managed by the NRF, encompasses radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, and the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) programme across nine African countries. It also involves human capital development and commercialization efforts.
