Job description

Finance Manager Job Description

The Finance Manager is responsible for preparing, developing, and maintaining long-term finance strategies and policies aligned with the overall strategy of the institution.

  1. Prepare the annual school budget in accordance with the school's strategy, ensuring individual school/department budgets contribute to the overall plan.
  2. Identify opportunities for additional revenue and cost savings to meet the overall business plan.
  3. Oversee the finance department and overall financial management.
  4. Manage financial reporting systems to ensure the availability of accurate information.
  5. Manage cash flow efficiently and determine optimal borrowing structures if required.
  6. Ensure effective management of debtors and fee collection in line with targets.
  7. Manage the school's trust accounting functions and oversee the pension fund.
  8. Ensure appropriate insurance coverage is in place and reviewed annually.
  9. Oversee health and safety policies and campus security.
  10. Ensure the school fleet is roadworthy, insured, and staff are properly licensed.
Annual Audit
  1. Ensure completion of audits.
  2. Finalize annual financial statements and present them to the finance committee for approval.
Contracts and SLA Management
  1. Review service provider contracts to identify and mitigate financial risks.
  2. Negotiate contracts or implement controls to address risks.
  3. Oversee facilities responsible for events, grounds, and building maintenance.
  4. Manage projects approved by the board.
General Administration and Other Responsibilities
  1. Participate in the College Executive (CEM) meetings.
  2. Maintain contact with statutory authorities and stakeholders.
  3. Manage the school's IT department, including line management of the ICT Systems Manager and ICT Administrator.
  4. Manage HR functions and line manage the HR Administrator.
Education and Experience
  1. A tertiary accounting qualification, preferably at Hons level, with articles.
  2. At least 5 years of experience as a Financial Manager or in a senior accounting role.
  3. Experience in an educational institution is advantageous.
