Job Title: Chief Safety Officer
Location: Limpopo, South Africa
Job Summary:
The Chief Safety Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the safety policies, procedures, and programs within our mining operations located in Limpopo, South Africa. They will lead a team of safety professionals, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with local and international safety regulations to minimize accidents and occupational hazards at our mining sites.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement safety policies and procedures in line with local legislation, international standards, and company objectives.
- Create and maintain a safety-first culture throughout the organization.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
- Lead incident investigations to determine root causes, propose corrective actions, and prevent future occurrences.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs to educate and empower employees on safe work practices.
- Monitor and evaluate safety performance indicators, analyze trends, and prepare reports for management’s review.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure safety requirements are integrated into operational practices and projects.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and legislative changes related to safety in mining.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, government agencies, and local communities on safety matters.
- Develop emergency response plans and conduct drills to ensure preparedness for potential emergencies.
- Assess and manage contractors’ safety performance and compliance with safety standards.
- Lead a team of safety professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and fostering professional development.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining Engineering, or related field.
- Proven work experience as a Chief Safety Officer or a similar leadership role within the mining industry.
- In-depth knowledge of mining safety regulations, best practices, and risk management.
- Strong understanding of South African mining legislation (e.g., Mines Health and Safety Act).
- Professional certification or membership in relevant safety associations or societies (e.g., NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, OHSAS, etc.) preferred.
- Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to influence and motivate individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Proven ability to lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and safety management software.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to various mining sites within Limpopo when required.
