Company Description

As the Section Manager UG, you will develop and implement proper business and operational action plans to ensure continuous achievement and uninterrupted production of Zibulo Colliery UG.

You will also be accountable for applying appropriate operational methodologies and procedures to ensure the safety and health of all employees and relevant stakeholders. You're not just managing the process.

Thungela Resources (Thungela means "to ignite" in isiZulu) is a leading South African thermal coal business, focused exclusively on thermal coal production.

It is one of the largest pure-play producers and exporters of thermal coal in South Africa based on aggregate coal reserves and marketable coal production.

Thungela focuses on exporting its thermal coal portfolio mainly to the Indian, Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle East, and North African markets.

Job Description

As the Section Manager, you will develop, maintain, update, and communicate all legal and operational policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines relevant to your area of responsibility, ensuring safety, health, and environmental targets are set and achieved. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Understanding the Safety Management System and ensuring it aligns with Thungela Resources' Safety, Health, and Environmental standards.
  2. Coordinating and hosting inspections, including Inspectorate / DMPR visits, and chairing SHE incident investigations, as well as managing contractors in line with safety standards.
  3. Creating and implementing operational plans and production targets that support the company's strategy.
  4. Planning the rehabilitation of mined areas and leading daily production meetings to ensure value is derived.
  5. Controlling costs within the prescribed budget and benchmarking against international standards.
  6. Analyzing budgets and expenses, and implementing cost-saving measures.
  7. Managing personnel effectively and optimizing operational assets.
Qualifications
  • Degree / BSc in Mining Engineering (NQF 7)
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of SA (ECSA) - advantageous
  • Registration with SA Colliery Managers Association
  • Mine Managers' Certificate of Competency
Experience
  • Minimum of 6 years' experience in underground coal mining.
  • Proficient in management principles related to mining and equipment.
  • Project management experience.
Additional Information
  • Knowledge of mine planning, environmental standards, and safety/risk management.
