Role Overview

This is a full-time on-site role for a Commercial Underwriter based in Johannesburg.

Embarking on a career as a Commercial Underwriter involves embracing a role focused on precision and thoughtful risk assessment.

You will evaluate potential risks, determine appropriate policy terms, and balance opportunity with caution.

Your responsibilities include issuing policies, processing renewals, handling endorsements, and responding promptly to client and insurer queries.

You will ensure systems are up-to-date and all underwriting processes comply with industry regulations.

Delivering excellent service to empower clients and strengthen stakeholder relationships is central to your role.

Additionally, you will grow your knowledge, stay updated with industry best practices, and actively manage your professional development through regular reviews and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Minimum Requirements

• 5+ years experience as a commercial underwriter
• Experience working with various insurers and commercial products
• Experience within a short-term insurance brokerage is preferred
• Strong analytical skills and expertise in commercial underwriting
• Experience with general commercial policies such as SME, Property, and Multimark policies
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work well independently and in a team

Qualifications

• Meets all Fit & Proper requirements as per the FSCA (e.g., no longer under supervision)
• RE5, Class of Business, or related insurance qualification
