Position : Food Safety Coordinator
Location : Epping, Cape Town
Reporting to : Quality Assurance Manager
Position Summary
We are looking for a Food Safety Coordinator who will be responsible for assisting the Quality Assurance Manager in ensuring that the company complies with food safety regulations and standards.
This role involves following all food safety rules, guidelines, and laws mandated by the government.
Job Purpose
This individual will oversee all aspects of the company's food safety programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
Key Duties / Responsibilities
- Monitor and improve the Food Safety Management System.
- Conduct food safety audits and inspections.
- Update and maintain system registers, records, and documentation.
- Maintain good manufacturing practices, product specifications, supplier certificates, etc.
- Keep records of weekly GMP inspections.
- Arrange food safety and sustainability meetings with the QA manager.
- Keep updated records of relevant local and international acts, regulations, and standards.
- Administer the Supply Management System concerning Food Safety, in collaboration with Health & Safety and Finance.
- Manage the Corrective and Preventative Action System and conduct regular follow-ups.
- Conduct internal and external supplier audits.
- Assist in preparing for customer audits.
- Respond to customer inquiries.
- Assist the QA Manager in implementing and overseeing sanitation/hygiene validation programs and food safety training.
- Oversee and assist in conducting employee training on food safety regulations and processes.
- Assist with export documentation (packing list, health certificates, etc.).
- Support customer visits to our operations.
- Conduct food safety investigations and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist with new product development.
- Maintain company procedures and policies.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Food Science or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a food safety role.
- In-depth knowledge of South African food safety legislation.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Strong analytical skills; proficiency in MS Access, MS Excel, and basic operational research principles.
- Excellent computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
- Valid South African driver's license.
