Job description

Job Description

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  1. Develop and undertake research projects related to Veterinary Wildlife medicine and/or health;
  2. Publish research findings in national and international scientific journals;
  3. Postgraduate training and supervision of master's and doctoral students;
  4. Obtain research grants and contribute to fundraising and third-stream income;
  5. Teach and provide practical training to undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in wildlife-related topics;
  6. Contribute to growing the Centre for Veterinary Wildlife Research and the Department of Production Animal Studies' research capacity and impact;
  7. Network with relevant industry stakeholders and foster collaborations;
  8. Engage with community and media;
  9. Perform administrative duties as delegated by the Centre Director and Head of Department;
  10. Engage in academic self-development and present data at congresses.

Minimum Requirements
  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  2. Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or eligibility for registration;
  3. Postgraduate studies and publications;
  4. An appropriate PhD in a relevant area of Wildlife Veterinary medicine and/or health with at least eight research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals, five as senior/first author (evidence required); OR
  5. A research Master's degree with specialization/certification in relevant area and similar publication record (evidence required);
  6. Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
  7. Proof of supervision of postgraduate students (MSc or PhD);
  8. Experience in research activities including grantsmanship;
  9. Evidence of continued professional development.
Required Competencies
  • Knowledge in Veterinary Wildlife medicine and/or health;
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Critical thinking ability;
  • Commitment to obtaining a PhD within a reasonable timeframe (if not already held);
  • Good project management and teamwork skills;
  • Research and teaching competencies including basic statistical and computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Lecturing experience at tertiary level;
  • Registration as a specialist with SAVC.

Salary Details: The annual package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as per UP policy guidelines.
