Job description

If you have a strong background in underwriting in the short-term insurance or reinsurance industry, Hannover Re South Africa, with offices in Johannesburg/South Africa, has just the role for you. See more details related to the role below, which is available on a permanent full-time basis.

You can look forward to

  1. Underwriting Treaty – Reinsurance underwriting functions; accurate use of rating tools, accurate capturing of treaty information, monitoring of results of each contract in portfolio, and employing corrective actions; attending broker/cedent meetings; acquiring new profitable business.
  2. Claims – Accurate and timely analyses of claims received daily; managing the entire process for the relevant portfolio within the procedures and guidelines; referring all contentious claims to Manager and/or Legal & Compliance Officer; raising necessary reserves.
  3. Client Relationship Management and Marketing – Familiarisation with the marketing strategy and programme of the unit and company; developing an annual marketing plan; interacting regularly with clients.
  4. Technical Accounts – Using client relationships to assist the Treaty Accounting Services unit with queries on particular accounts.
  5. Administration – Accurate capturing of all relevant treaty information, filing, file audits; liaising with Treaty Accounting Services to ensure accounts are up to date and cash is paid timely as per treaty agreements.
  6. Stakeholder Management – Effectively communicating with the immediate team and the wider Treaty and business units, including managing relationships with the direct Manager, Senior Management, Underwriting Managing Agencies, and the Home Office.

You come equipped with

  • Undergraduate degree in business, commerce, or insurance
  • Minimum 5–10 years’ experience in the short-term insurance industry
  • Experience in specialist lines such as Property and Casualty underwriting, with a focus on engineering, marine, or property
  • Working knowledge of underwriting principles, financial knowledge, analytical experience
  • Proven track record in initiating and following through on projects
  • Proven track record in dealing with national and international clients, with a focus on the African continent
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to critically assess and review own work and work independently
  • Attention to detail for accurate work
  • Accountability for deliverables within scope of work
  • Reinsurance experience is an advantage
  • Proficient in English (spoken, reading, writing)
  • Beginner level Access and SQL skills are an advantage.
