About the position

Background:
The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges. It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology.

Main purpose of the job

To provide technical support, manage and supervise a team of Tracers assigned to a cluster to ensure individualised successful tracing support (Physical and/or telephonic) for patients either newly diagnosed with HIV and on the Waiting on ART (WOA) list or those already on ART and are on any defaulter lists.

Key performance areas
  1. Coordinate the allocation of ART defaulters or HIV positive patients waiting to be initiated to the Tracers and monitor the success of return to care.
  2. Mentor, capacitate, and provide technical assistance to Tracers to ensure linkage and retention of HIV positive patients.
  3. Coordinate and monitor tracing of missed appointments to avoid patients lost to follow-up (home visits, calls, SMS).
  4. Support referral of HIV positive patients to multidisciplinary teams (psychosocial, nutrition, etc.).
  5. Supervise and lead Tracers to ensure daily activities are implemented and monitored.
  6. Liaise with community stakeholders to facilitate access for lost to follow-up clients.
  7. Coordinate community campaigns for HIV management and retention activities.
  8. Support team in follow-up contacts and physical tracing arrangements.
  9. Mentor Tracers on appointment scheduling and follow-up visits.
  10. Ensure confidentiality and proper reporting of activities.
  11. Manage assets and administrative tasks related to the team.
  12. Set, review, and improve team performance and conduct training as needed.
  13. Promote teamwork, self-management, and positive work attitude.
Minimum education and training
  • Grade 12
  • Degree/Diploma in Social Science, Management, or equivalent qualification
Work experience
  • At least 1 year relevant healthcare experience, especially with TB and HIV clients
