Job Purpose
The MBA Educator for a specific set of modules is a subject expert and is responsible for the deployment of learning, teaching, assessment and student support in the open distance e-learning (ODeL) mode of delivery.You are a primary point of connection between the Institution, the modules (programmes) and the students.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the MBA Educator include the following:
Module Management:
- Facilitation of the learning and teaching of specifically allocated modules according to the syllabi congruent with the programme.
- Adherence to the published academic and operational calendars and timetables for each semester, and any other ad hoc deadline as required by the Institution.
- Timeous upload of quality assured teaching, learning and assessment collateral to the online learner management system.
- Timeous responses to student queries and to appeals assigned to you on the learner management and administrative systems and in your email inbox and/or telephonic messages.
Student Support:
- Be committed and available to support students consistently and timeously.
- Provide a student support function through telephonic, email or online consultation and communication with students in a developmental and professional manner.
- Ensure that relevant Boston policies and procedures are accurately and consistently implemented.
Teaching and Learning:
- Ensure that the teaching and learning and assessment strategy for the module/s is aligned to the Institution’s pedagogical approach, and policies on teaching, learning and assessment.
Research supervision:
- Supervise postgraduate students in both taught and research-based modules.
- Co-supervise postgraduate students in both taught and research-based modules with an externally appointed supervisor. The role of the institutional co-supervisor is to be the link between the actors (student, supervisor and institution).
- Submit progress reports for supervised and co-supervised students as per stipulated internal processes.
Learning Material Development:
You are responsible for the timeous production of quality learning material for use in the learning engagement with students. Learning material produced equates to primary textbook/s selected and/or study guide and course outline developed, the list of recommended readings, the tuition plans, and moderated informal and formal assessment events. MBA Educators will be involved in the production of learning material at various intervals, and will also be involved in internal moderation and setting of assessment events. This material is further augmented by the MBA Educator for in-semester deployment and student support, e.g., weekly teaching & learning activities, pre-and-post assessment prep/feedback video-graphic presentations, additional notes and handouts, sample case studies or artefacts.
Administration:
- Grading and internal moderation of all assessment events (formative, summative and all supplementary) as per the academic calendar.
- Regular meeting with the Academic & Quality Manager to whom you report (if you are responsible for more than one module you may report to more than one AQM and will need to meet with each AQM as required).
- Provide relevant information as required for the module evidence file to the Academic & Quality Manager.
Quality Assurance and Moderation:
- Participating in internal and external moderation processes as required.
- Participation in internal developmental workshops toward the enhanced quality of our provision of learning, teaching, assessment and student support.
- Attendance at Programme Committee meetings for all programmes in which your module/s are part of the curriculum.
- Involvement in the syllabus design, development process and the updating of existing syllabi.
- Provision of analyses of data as required for the purpose of assessment analyses and module evaluations using appropriate tools.
- Participate in the collation and preparation of Programme Annual Reports (PAR) for the programme/s in which the modules you are responsible for are situated.
- Participate in the collation and preparation of Module Reviews for the modules you are responsible for, as part of cyclical programme evaluations.
- Be available for performance evaluations by the academic team. Be open to feedback and development arising from this process.
- Regular reporting to your direct and indirect line managers.
Scholarly Activity:
Ongoing participation in scholarly activities including research, continued professional development, and the attendance and presentation at internal colloquia in your domain of specialisation.
Community Engagement:
Ongoing participation in community engagement endeavours as per the Institution’s approach.
General:
Any other reasonable duties as assigned from time to time.
Required Qualification/s:
Candidates are required to hold a minimum of a Doctoral degree in the domain of the disciplinary area/s of the module(s).
Required Experience:
- Evidence of a minimum of five (5) years’ industry experience.
- Evidence of a minimum of three (3) years’ lecturing experience at a higher education institution. This experience may be in the face-to-face (contact) or distance modes of provision.
- Evidence of a minimum of three (3) scholarly publications in academic journals and/or conference proceedings.

- Candidates are expected to have a thorough knowledge of the disciplinary field in which they teach and are expected to continually develop themselves professionally in this regard.
- A thorough understanding of and ability to manage the deployment of teaching, learning, assessment and student support is important.
- A thorough understanding of the principles of assessment and moderation for higher education as well as forming a grounding in the pedagogical approach of the Institution and its programmes.
- The ability to communicate effectively to a diverse audience in English both in spoken and written form.
- Interpersonal skills with an ability to meaningfully and sensitively engage with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Emotional intelligence to navigate the interactions with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, i.e., learning behaviour, demographic, social, geographic, economic, etc.
- The ability to navigate online learner management systems is required, along with an ability to utilise and learn general computer hardware and software.
- Where required, a thorough understanding of and ability to utilise specialised software is required (e.g., simulations, generative AI, etc.) where the disciplinary area requires this understanding and ability.
- Flexibility and problem-solving are necessary skills to possess in this position.
