We are looking for an ambitious, motivated, and innovative Junior Design Engineer to join our team. The role reports to the Design Office Manager and is based in Spartan, Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

Purpose of the role

Develop and design products, equipment, and tools to produce high-quality products that meet performance standards. Analyze equipment specifications and process requirements to conceive practical designs.

Job responsibilities
  1. Review product development requirements for compatibility with methods to determine cost and schedules.
  2. Integrate equipment and material capabilities to meet target specifications.
  3. Hand over methods / processes and equipment to production.
  4. Use CAD or CAE systems to model designs and produce detailed engineering drawings.
  5. Specify precise functional requirements; design, test, and integrate components; evaluate design effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.
  6. Develop and evaluate testing, specifications, and validation plans; create material specifications and bills of materials.
  7. Collaborate with manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product teams.
  8. Ensure compliance with safety and design standards.
  9. Generate mass estimates for tender proposals.
  10. Produce technical data packs with detailed drawings and bills of materials, ensuring all specifications are met.
  11. Travel as needed to meet with customers and take on-site measurements.
  12. Maintain standards in modeling and detailing; check drawings and BOMs to prevent NCRs.
  13. Participate in developing technical standards and training materials.
  14. Maintain engineering calculations to support product design.
  15. Suggest improvements for product quality, pricing, and performance.
  16. Support other departments, including site visits and CAD modeling for FEA.
  17. Develop and maintain engineering calculations and standards.
  18. Consult with Lead Designer and Design Office Manager on design changes.
  19. Maintain an organized electronic drawing and file system for traceability.
  20. Share resources across teams as needed based on workload.
Qualifications & Experience

BTech or BEng in Mechanical Engineering. 0-2 years CAD modeling and drafting experience in sheet metal fabrication, including welding specifications, preferably in Siemens NX or SolidEdge. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
