Network Operations Engineer
The Network Operations Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end management, optimization, and monitoring of the live production network infrastructure.
This includes overseeing the physical, optical, and logical layers of the network, as well as managing the supporting OSS / BSS (Operational Support Systems / Business Support Systems) environments.
The role involves ensuring network uptime, handling network configuration, troubleshooting, managing incidents, and providing continuous improvement to both network performance and customer service.
The Network Operations Engineer plays a key role in maintaining high levels of network availability and ensuring that customer SLAs (Service Level Agreements) are met efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Network Design, Development, and Procurement: Design, procure, acquire, and establish the necessary equipment and OSS / BSS systems to optimize the management of the live production network. Ensure that all network systems are designed to handle the dynamic needs of the business while maintaining the required performance and uptime.
- Network Uptime and Availability: Develop and implement controls to ensure continuous uptime across the core, aggregation, and access layers of the network. Establish and maintain processes to meet uptime targets as per internal and customer expectations.
- Governance and Compliance: Design, implement, and enforce governance structures to manage network operations. Ensure all operations comply with policies, regulations, and industry standards including MEF.
- Customer Order Execution and SLA Management: Optimize customer order processes to ensure timely delivery and meet SLAs. Manage customer service environments to maintain service levels.
- Incident Management and Corrective Actions: Facilitate rapid identification and resolution of network issues. Minimize downtime and service disruptions through effective corrective measures.
- Network Surveillance and Monitoring: Develop surveillance policies, monitor network performance, and identify areas for improvement to meet SLAs.
- Network Performance and Configuration Management: Implement policies for network performance management, scheduling monitoring and tuning activities. Manage configurations according to standards.
- Troubleshooting and Fault Management: Handle trouble tickets efficiently, conduct fault investigations, and provide solutions to network issues.
- Network Upgrades and Change Management: Oversee scheduled upgrades and changes, ensuring minimal impact on service and uptime.
- Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate reports on network health, performance, and incidents. Document management processes for reference and compliance.
- Collaboration and Strategic Planning: Work with architects and engineers to optimize network performance and contribute to strategic planning.
- Security and Access Control: Implement and audit security policies to protect the network from vulnerabilities.
- Customer Service and Query Management: Respond promptly to customer inquiries and manage escalations.
- Change Control and Governance: Ensure all changes follow formal procedures and participate in governance processes.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
- Bachelor's degree in a technical, engineering, or computer-related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- CCNP, CCNA, or equivalent certifications. Additional vendor-specific certifications are a plus.
Work Experience
- At least 8 years of experience in live network operations within medium to large organizations.
- Experience managing large-scale production networks and OSS / BSS systems.
- Proven troubleshooting and performance monitoring skills.
