Overall purpose of the role:

To assist employers in protecting their employees, Sanlam Group Risk offers group risk products – designed to insure employees and protect their families in the event of long-term illness or injury or death while working. Along with retirement savings, group risk benefits such as life insurance, group accident insurance, disability income protection, and group critical illness form the backbone of staff benefit packages.

The Senior Medical Advisor role focuses on optimising risk profits from risk products for all business entities in Sanlam Group Risk. This necessitates continued research and development, data analysis, establishing underwriting and claims assessment policies, assisting with product design, development, and pricing, as well as conducting quality control of risk ratings by the underwriting and claims teams. Collaboration with smaller units and projects within the larger Sanlam Life Insurance framework may be necessary from time to time. The successful candidate must be willing to travel nationally if required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to claims policy and operations.
  • Manage and update evidence-based in-house underwriting philosophy.
  • Assist Underwriting team with the prognosis and risk classification of medical conditions.
  • Quality control of risk ratings by the Underwriting and Claims teams.
  • Interpretation of medical tests to improve underwriting risk.
  • Explore and work in multidisciplinary teams to use data and other innovative markers to enrich insurance assessments.
  • Assist in Assessment of claims
  • Assist product development and pricing with medico-legal definitions, disease incidence and prevalence stats.
  • Training of underwriters and claims personnel.
  • Reinsurer networking
  • Liaison and training of Occupational Health professionals.
  • Client service employers, funds and employee benefit brokers
  • Providing strategic input with regards to pandemic challenges.

Qualification and Experience:

  • M.B.Ch.B. and registered with HPCSA.
  • Post graduate qualification in Occupational Health
  • Any post-graduate qualification in Epidemiology and statistics, Impairment Rating according to AMA guidelines, financial services will be an advantage.
  • At least 5 years of recent experience in the medical field.
  • Occupational Health experience
  • Experience in Insurance Medicine within the Long-term Insurance industry will be an advantage.
