Number : Looking for two UCT students

Reports to : SHAWCO Board of Governance

SHAWCO is a student-run volunteer society and a standalone Nonprofit Organisation (NPO). This duality allows SHAWCO Education the unique opportunity to engage in a variety of projects and programmes. The overall goal for SHAWCO Education is to help support students (high school and university) in as many ways as possible.

The President is the head coordinator of the Education sector and is accountable for determining the sector's strategic goals and ensuring their implementation alongside SHAWCO's management team. This includes guiding the Executive and Senior Leadership (SL) in the day-to-day operations of their projects, executive oversight for board accountability, management and administration, financial oversight, and risk management. Through the President's discretion, the responsibilities of the education sector areas of mental health, computer literacy, and law initiatives will be split amongst the Executive.

SHAWCO's Projects

Below is a list of current and potential projects SHAWCO will engage in:

  • Mental Health Workshops for students and volunteers
  • Matric Support Initiative (MSI), providing support for Matric students, including mentor and mentee programmes
  • SHAWCO Digital Literacy, a programme to help improve computer literacy levels among students
  • SHAWCO Reading Programme, a short project in Hout Bay to promote reading enjoyment among students
  • SHAWCO Bank, a long-term initiative to ensure volunteers (UCT students) receive full benefits of their volunteer experience

As a member of the Executive, the President :

  • Designs and oversees the implementation of the strategic plan
  • Provides leadership in curriculum development, teaching, holistic learning, and community development
  • Oversees the management of operations, administration, planning, finances, and human resources
  • Enhances the overall quality of participant experience
  • Manages key strategic relationships with external partners, local communities, foundations, and donors
  • Performs representative and ceremonial duties
  • Represents the Education sector on the UCT Developmental Agency Sub-Committee alongside the SHAWCO Health president
  • Serves as an executive member of the SHAWCO board of governance, representing the Education sector

Time Commitments

  • Weekly Executive Committee meetings (2 hours)
  • Weekly executive meetings (1 hour)
  • Biweekly Senior Leadership meetings (2 hours)
  • Flexible availability for additional meetings and consultations (~2 hours/week)
  • Total minimum commitment of approximately 10 hours per week for regular operations
  • Additional quarterly commitments (~8 hours per quarter), including the Annual General Meeting
