A leading financial institution seeks a skilled legal professional to join their Gauteng Legal Recoveries Team. The role involves engaging with clients in financial distress, negotiating legal agreements, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation. Candidates should possess strong analytical and communication skills, along with a minimum of 5 years' experience in debt recovery or insolvency. This position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, contributing to the management of default portfolios.
This opportunity involves working in the Gauteng Legal Recoveries Team across multiple recovery portfolios and products.The role requires presence in the Sandton office with an alternate presence in the Pretoria office every second week, on a pre-set day and as needed.Experience, Skills, and CapabilitiesExtensive engagement with non-performing clients through various mediums to understand the reasons for financial distress and facilitate resolution via suitable commercial arrangements, considering the client's financial position and the bank's security.Negotiating, advising, drafting, vetting / reviewing, finalizing, and implementing legal strategies, agreements, processes, and other legal documentation for the default portfolio.Reviewing and implementing payment arrangements with clients.Processing payment arrangements through the credit process and facilitating restructuring documents where applicable.Scrutinizing security, insurance, and valuations on deals in arrears / default, arranging additional cover if necessary.Handling administration tasks such as loading arrear and default classifications and security values on systems.Providing comprehensive monthly reporting on the portfolio as required.Identifying and minimizing potential legal risks.Maintaining a holistic risk assessment mindset for clients in arrears / default.Managing the overall quality of the default book, including write-offs and impairments.Adhering to credit policies, SLAs, recovery workflows, and default policies.Ensuring quality risk management.Liaising with legal practitioners to set directions and make sound risk decisions regarding legal matters.Participating in strategic decisions and their implementation.Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, legal practitioners, and stakeholders.Ensuring compliance with the NCA, bank policies, and relevant legislation.Preparing detailed handover packs for legal practitioners.Monitoring timelines and strategies with legal practitioners.Managing the quality of actions taken to resolve the assigned book.Managing and reducing the aging of the allocated book.Minimum RequirementsLLB degree or equivalent legal qualification.Admission as an attorney or advocate in South Africa (or equivalent).Minimum 5 years' experience in debt recovery, insolvency, or related fields.Strong knowledge of South African law, including the National Credit Act and Insolvency Act.Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.At Investec, we seek intelligent, energetic individuals filled with passion, integrity, and curiosity.
