Job description

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Law.
  2. Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a legal or professional services firm.
  3. Strong knowledge of SARS tax regulations, VAT, and PAYE submissions.
  4. Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Pastel, Xero, or Sage).
  5. Experience with legal trust accounting is an advantage.
  6. Advanced Excel skills and knowledge of financial reporting.
  7. Essential: Own Vehicle and valid Driver's License.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Transactions & Record Keeping:
    1. Capture and process invoices, ensuring accuracy and proper authorization.
    2. Maintain and reconcile financial records, ledgers, and bank statements.
    3. Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
    4. Process client trust accounts in compliance with legal firm regulations.
  2. Tax & Compliance:
    1. Prepare and submit PAYE, VAT, and other statutory tax returns.
    2. Ensure compliance with SARS regulations and liaise with tax authorities when required.
    3. Assist in the preparation of financial statements for audits and tax purposes.
    4. Maintain compliance with legal industry financial regulations, including trust accounting rules.
  3. Reconciliations & Reporting:
    1. Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, supplier accounts, and general ledger accounts.
    2. Generate financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
    3. Assist with budgeting and financial forecasting for the firm.
  4. Payroll & Expense Management:
    1. Process payroll and ensure timely salary payments.
    2. Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with labour laws.
    3. Monitor and manage firm expenses, ensuring cost efficiency.
  5. Trust Accounting (Specific to Legal Firms):
    1. Ensure compliance with the Legal Practice Council's trust account regulations.
    2. Maintain accurate records of client trust accounts and perform reconciliations.
    3. Report any irregularities in trust accounting to management.
  6. General Accounting Support:
    1. Assist with annual audits and liaise with external auditors.
    2. Support management with financial analysis and strategic planning.
    3. Implement financial policies and procedures to improve efficiency.
