Job description

Our client, an international manufacturer of piping solutions, invites applications for the position of General Manager (GM).

The candidate must be a qualified, certified Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)). The GM will be responsible for overseeing and managing all operations in South Africa, playing a critical role in driving business growth, establishing strategic objectives, and ensuring operational excellence aligned with the company's goals.

The GM acts as the primary point of contact between headquarters and the local team, stakeholders, and clients within the country.

The position reports to the Managing Director.

Responsibilities
  1. Strategic Planning: Develop and execute strategic plans to achieve company objectives within South Africa. Conduct market analysis, identify growth opportunities, and formulate market entry strategies. Collaborate with headquarters to align local goals with overall company strategy.
  2. Business Development: Drive activities to expand market share and revenue. Identify potential clients, partners, and key accounts, establishing strong relationships. Analyze market trends, competitors, and customer needs to develop effective sales and marketing strategies.
  3. Team Management: Build and lead a high-performing team. Set performance goals, conduct reviews, and foster a positive, inclusive work environment encouraging collaboration and development.
  4. Operations and Compliance: Ensure smooth daily operations, including logistics, supply chain, and distribution. Enforce compliance with local laws and company policies. Monitor KPIs, analyze operational data, and implement efficiency improvements. Manage the country budget and financial performance.
  5. Relationship Management: Serve as the primary contact for local stakeholders, including government bodies and industry associations. Maintain strong relationships with clients and partners, representing the company at industry events.
  6. Reporting and Communication: Provide regular performance reports to headquarters. Communicate insights, challenges, and company updates to the local team and global management.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Chartered Accountant (SA)
  • 5 years GM experience in manufacturing and/or construction industries
  • Excellent business acumen and leadership skills
  • Strong ethical and governance knowledge
  • High energy, self-motivation, and ability to work under pressure
  • Market research and analysis expertise
  • Understanding of local business environment, market dynamics, and cultural nuances
  • Proven senior leadership experience in a multinational organization
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Financial acumen with budgeting and analysis experience
  • Problem-solving skills and decision-making ability in fast-paced settings
  • Proficiency in local language(s) and fluency in English; additional languages are a plus
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
  • IT skills: proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Minimum 5 years and maximum 10 years in a GM role
  • Clean work record (no criminal record)
